Holy Days of Obligation/Abstinence

Holy Days of Obligation in Canada for members of the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter are:

  • Every Sunday of the Year

  • The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ (December 25)

  • Mary, the Holy Mother of God (January 1)

  • Ascension Day (Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter)

  • The Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15)

  • All Saints’ Day (November 1)

Whenever these days fall on a Saturday or a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated.

EMBER DAYS are days of abstinence from all flesh meat for members of the Ordinariate (unless one of these days happens to fall on a Solemnity).

The 12 Ember Days of the year are:

  • the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the First Sunday of Lent

  • the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after Whitsunday (Pentecost)

  • the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after Roodmas (Holy Cross Day; September 14)

  • the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the First Sunday of Advent

These are days of prayer and penance for an increase in vocations.

These Ember Days are in addition to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fasting/abstinence.
